Overview

On October 14, 2025, the West Side Community Fund convened 10 community leaders, including representatives from 5 grantee organizations and 2 funders, at Hudson Guild’s Fulton Community Center to discuss food insecurity on Manhattan’s West Side. The grassroots organizations leading this work serve thousands of neighbors weekly, offering not only meals, but dignity, trust, and a sense of community. This cross-sector roundtable highlighted the power of local partnerships in building more resilient community food systems.

Over light refreshments, attendees connected, shared best practices, and identified collective challenges and opportunities. From food rescue logistics to volunteer management, de-escalation training, and crisis response referrals, the discussion illuminated the immense value of collaboration, and the need for sustained investment in local capacity-building.

Shared Challenges and Collective Solutions

Volunteer Safety & Mental Health Crises

Volunteers face safety challenges serving community members experiencing mental health crises. Organizations are exploring de-escalation training, partnering with social service professionals for crisis response, and proactively managing theft.

Food Supply & Distribution

Many groups have surplus rescued food but lack the storage and administrative systems needed for efficient distribution. Coordinating purchasing efforts and building databases are proposed solutions to improve resource management across organizations.

Waste Reduction & Dignity

To reduce waste and preserve the dignity of food pantry clients, organizations are using technology that tracks inventory and allows neighbors to select the items that meet their needs.

Next Steps

This inaugural roundtable represented the first in a new series of convenings designed to bolster grantee capacity across impact areas as part of WSCF’s broader programming. Building on the success of this pilot, future gatherings will continue to deepen collaboration and strengthen the collective impact of our grantee partners.
